VERNEROVÁ, Darina
The bachelor thesis deals with the theme of youth and organized crime in the literary work of Neapolitan journalist and writer Roberto Saviano. Analysis of Games and Films Inspired by Or Spin-Offs of The Godfather
DAVID, Tomáš
In this innovative study, the student will examine films and games which exhibit an intertextual relationship with the influential Godfather film series from the 1970s. Both games and films will be under study specifically applying theories of intertextuality which will be both presented and applied. The variety of genres approached will serve as an example of the ever expanding genres of texts worthy of rigorous academic investigation and analysis.
A Comparison of Mario Puzo's The Godfather with the Film Adaptations
DAVID, Tomáš
The student undertook an analysis of the varied aspects linked with The Godfather regarding plot, character presentation and dialogue, as well as aspects of the narrative less conducive to direct representation in the film productions. Then the student compared the three film adaptations with Puzo's text, comparing and contrasting the original novel with the three adaptations, referring to, among other aspects, how changes were adapted to issues pertaining to a cinematic audience and further developed by the renowned director and actors. The general consensus is that The Godfather I and The Godfather II, both winning academy awards, were vastly superior to The Godfather III. This comparison re-evaluates that perception.
Criminal Intelligence in the Fight Against Organized Crime in Italy
Matiz, Sophie ; Michálek, Luděk (advisor) ; Aslan, Emil (referee)
Criminal intelligence or Law Enforcement intelligence has been conceived to fight crime and restore the order of law whenever a country's national security is at risk. The discipline has its origins in the 1920s, a time in which the main method for intelligence collection was the famous dossier system - the gathering of basic information about individuals. Nowadays, the discipline has come to be considered a key tool in order to contrast organized crime. However, the European discipline on the matter as well as the establishment of the European Model on Criminal Intelligence are to be considered quite recent. In fact, the first real model on criminal intelligence was established only at the beginning of the years 2000s in the United Kingdom. Therefore, the scope of this thesis project is to study the ways in which criminal intelligence operates at the European level. However, this cannot be accomplished without providing an accurate definition of the main concepts - such as organized crime and intelligence - related to the discipline. Moreover, a fundamental part of this thesis regards the study of Europol and its evolution into a proper agency that works to eradicate the phenomenon of organized crime throughout the European territory. In particular, the elaborate aims to underline Europol's...
Image of mafia in Leonardo Sciascia's works
Bubela, Petr ; Flemrová, Alice (advisor) ; Pelán, Jiří (referee)
The aim of my thesis is an analysis of the literary image of mafia in Leonardo Sciascia's works from the 60th and 70th of the 20th century. The literary techniques are documented using the examples of the concrete parts of the text in which the mafia operates. At the same time I give an account of the way Sciascia applies the genre rules of the detective story. The subjects of study represent four novels (The Day of the Owl, To Each His Own, Context and One Way or Another) together with one drama L'onorevole. The above mentioned works have been interpreted and analyzed in terms of the structure, genre and language used while the findings of other scholars focused on Sciascia's work have been taken into account of as well. Mafia constitutes one of the key motifs in the work of Leonardo Sciascia. His reoccurring interest stemmed from the fact that he was well acquainted with the phenomenon, partly due to his personal experience and partly due to his intensive study of the matter. Nevertheless he refused to attribute the existence of the mafia solely to Sicily. In his perception, mafia was only one manifestation of Power on which he critically reflected all his life. Sciascia perceived mafia as a result of the social conditions and as an integral part of the power system of Sicily, or consequently the...

Comparison of crime organisations Cosa Nostra and `Ndrangheta
Denemark, Jan ; Mejstřík, Martin (advisor) ; Menclová, Barbora (referee)
The theme of my bachelor thesis is a comparison of the organized crime, especially the study of the structures of criminal organizations such as Cosa Nostra and 'ndrangheta. Because these structures have a significant difference in their style of building their own hierarchies and they are working quite differently in general, I would like to focus on and answer the crucial question in my thesis, to what extent these differences affect the fact that 'ndrangheta is now the most important mafia in Italy instead of Cosa Nostra. The fact that Cosa Nostra and 'ndrangheta are so different in their own structures, their detail comparison is offered in every part of their organization. Besides the description of the social base and the historical evolution which we cannot skip and besides the comprehensive exploration of the development context I would like to focus in my second part of the thesis on the fact how the differences between them influence the major decisions. I will describe especially the difference between the last approximately forty years because on this era we can easily see the difference between the success of these two organizations. While Cosa Nostra is nowadays a shadow of her historical fame 'ndrangheta in this period took over and now this organization is the number one when it...
Comparison of the media image of prosecutors G. Falcone and P. Borsellino in Italian press before and after the year 1992
Šauerová, Jana ; Cebe, Jan (advisor) ; Hájek, Roman (referee)
The topic of Mafia and the fight against it has always been very closely followed by media. The content of the news does not, however, always reflect the truth; sometimes we can even see an inclination to subjectivity and bias. On the example of Italian prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, it is shown how the media formed the medial image of people who were particularly engaged in fighting the organised crime. Falcone and Borsellino were two Sicilian prosecutors who made a significant contribution in fight against the Mafia in the 1980s and 1990s. The medial image of both prosecutors was changing over time. The goal of this thesis is to compare the medial image of both prosecutors created by two Italian daily newspapers before and after 1992 (the year of the assassination of the prosecutors) and to asses the eventual differences in the approach of these periodicals. Qualitative analysis of selected regional and national newspapers shows that before the assassinations in 1992, Falcone and Borsellino were criticized and attacked, on the other hand, after 1992, a heroization process occurred. The medial content of both periodicals have been compared and specific topics covered by each of them have been identified.

Securitisation of Organised Violence Phenomena in Europe: The Cases of Great Britain and Italy
Mrázková, Tina ; Ditrych, Ondřej (advisor) ; Bureš, Oldřich (referee)
The diploma thesis titled Securitisation of Organized Violence in Europe: The Case of Great Britain and Italy deals with the analysis of security discourses in the United Kingdom during the conflict in Northern Ireland and Italy during the war with the Sicilian Mafia according to the securitization theory of the so-called Copenhagen School and their subsequent comparison. The main aim of this thesis is to capture the form of securitization processes in Italy in connection with the local organized crime. To reach this objective the situation in Italy is confronted with securitization processes in Northern Ireland whose conflict is a frequent subject of international relations and security studies. The theory of securitization as a research tool is presented in its original form formulated by the Copenhagen School and is supplemented by numerous criticisms by later securitization theorists. A significant part of the thesis is focused on a thorough analysis of historical and social context of the investigated phenomenon and on capturing of many securitization statements of political actors to which this work is primarily oriented. The discourse analysis is structured into five stages that reflect the most dramatic periods in development of the presented issue. These periods are characterized by the...
